Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy

Following today’s announcement regarding a possible link between acetaminophen (Tylenol) use during pregnancy and an increased risk of autism, we want to share guidance from two leading medical organizations: the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Both SMFM and ACOG emphasize that current scientific evidence does not conclusively support a link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and conditions such as autism or ADHD. We continue to support the advice for pregnant patients to treat medical conditions, such as, maternal fever, persistent headaches and pain with acetaminophen.

We encourage you to read more about this on ACOG’s “Acetaminophen in Pregnancy FAQ” linked here. As always, please talk to your doctor at your next visit if you have any concerns.
